It’s the kind of thing I wish had happened last season when I was writing the book. In the game against Torquay at Hayes Lane recently, the pitch was invaded by Gareth the Bromley club cat, who sat down and refused to move. Gareth was named after local legend Gareth Williams, a player with similar hair colour and he (the cat) can usually be found in the club office, or just wandering around the ground.
On Saturday, he clearly got bored with his usual routine and parked himself just outside the penalty box until he was eventually scooped up and escorted from the pitch by Bromley’s Dave Martin. Gareth did not go quietly, and Martin was photographed in the dressing room after the game with a spectacular collection of scratches across his chest.
